Within some sections of the nail industry methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a liquid monomer continues to be used as an ingredient in artificial nail products. MMA can be also be found in nail powders as 'polymers'.

MMA monomers are considered too dangerous for use in the nail and beauty industry. The US Food and Drug Administration has banned its use. The presence of MMA monomers in acrylic nail liquids has been reported as as the cause of numerous adverse health effects, including.

·  allergic contact dermatitis

·  permanent loss of the nail plate

·  loss of sensation in the fingertips

It should be understood however, that these health problems do not apply to the use of MMA polymer (nail powders). EMA is also considered a safer alternative to MMA monomer, as it is less likely to cause allergic reactions and damage nail plates.
